The Struggle Of Gareth Henry

Gareth Henry is a Jamaican professional badminton player who has taken high honors in a number of international games.

An open homosexual, in 2004, he was made head of the Jamaican Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexual, and Gays (known as J-Flag) after the former leader was stabbed to death for his homosexuality. One big job of J-Flag was helping such individuals who were homeless because their families and society had completely rejected them. In addition to being homeless, the situation is even more hopeless for those who are suffering from AIDS.

In 2007 Gareth Henry and several other Jamaican homosexuals were cornered by an angry mob and beaten by the police. The encounter occurred in Kingston’s Monarch Pharmacy on Valentine’s Day of that year. He says that shortly afterward he complained about this incident directly to the Jamaican Ministry of Justice. They did nothing. Things got so bad that in order to save his life from certain death at the hands of the police, he was forced to go into hiding. However, the police found him and kept making death threats against his life.

Gareth Henry states that in the last decade alone up to the time of his departure, 13 of his friends were killed in homophobic attacks, many at the hands of the police. Having had so many friends killed by the police, Gareth Henry knew that these were not idle threats. He eventually fled to Canada for asylum in 2008. He has since become a strong international human rights activist. His primary agenda remains seeking to have the worldwide human rights community instigate change in his former homeland.
