Doe Deere is the CEO and founder of Lime Crime, a vegan based makeup company in Los Angeles and a Russian born immigrant from the city of Izhevsk, Russia. As a young girl Deere dreamt of a life in the United States after obsessing over American Culture. In her spare time Deere emerged herself in American music, movies, magazines, and pop-culture and soon came to realize that the American life was the life she wanted.
At the impressionable age of 17 Deere moved to New York along with her mother and younger sister in search of a better life and that elusive American dream. Once arriving in New York Deere and her family soon realized that the iconic images they had seen of New York while in Russia were all magnified a million times over in real life.
The trio worked as hard as they could cleaning other peoples’ homes or taking care of other peoples’ pets. Deere’s mother was a successful accountant back in Russia but struggled to make ends meet initially in New York. Deere admits that those were difficult times as they were forced to live in a homeless shelter for six months and often had to rely on church handouts to eat. During this time Deere would often escape the hardships of her life by daydreaming of being a fashion designer and creating sketches of clothing that temporarily provided her with moments of solace.
One day their lives began to change for the better after being introduced to a non-profit legal organization named Sanctuary for Families lead by attorney Dorchen Leidholdt who believed in Deere’s family and soon was able to get them back on their feet. Leidholdt helped provide the family with a home of their own in Harlem, was able to help Deere’s mother land a job in accounting, and was able to get Deere into the Fashion Institute of Technology based on Deere’s drawings that she used to create while in the homeless shelter.
In time Doe Deere was able to start her company Lime Crime which has become a great success and has employed over 35 people. Deere believes faithfully that people can begin to thrive even while at their most vulnerable and can achieve their own American dream with the help and faith of others, a philosophy which Deere embraces full heartedly.
